MORBID ANATOMY I found this while flipping through some machine project photo archives on flickr, here's a repost of the detils:

The Secret Museum Exhibition, Photographs by Joanna Ebenstein. Observatory, 2010. Find out more here.An exhibition exploring the poetics of hidden, untouched and curious collections from around the world in photographs and artifacts, by Joanna Ebenstein, co-founder of Observatory and creator of Morbid Anatomy.Photographer and blogger Joanna Ebenstein has traveled the Western world seeking and documenting untouched, hidden, and curious collections, from museum store-rooms to private collections, cabinets of curiosity to dusty natural history museums, obscure medical museums to hidden archives. The exhibition “The Secret Museum” will showcase a collection of photographs from Ebenstein’s explorations–including sites in The Netherlands, Italy, France, Austria, England and the United States–which document these spaces while at the same time investigating the psychology of collecting, the visual language of taxonomies, notions of “The Specimen” and the ordered archive, and the secret life of objects and collections, with an eye towards capturing the poetry, mystery and wonder of these liminal spaces. In tandem with this exhibition, Ebenstein has organized a 2 week “Collector’s Cabinet” at the The Coney Island Museum, which will showcase astounding objects held in private collections, including artifacts featured in her Private Cabinet photo series of 2009.To download press release, which includes sample images, please click here.On view from April 10th-June 6thObservatory543 Union Street at Nevins, Brooklyn, New York (click here for directions)3-6 Thursday and Friday12-6 Saturday and Sunday

The Search For Shomakoh Identity Begins...

Nationalism emphasizes collective identity - a 'people' must be autonomous, united, and express a single national culture. However, some nationalists stress individualism as an important part of their own national identity.National flags, national anthems, and other symbols of national identity are often considered sacred, as if they were religious rather than political symbols. Deep emotions are aroused. Gellner and Breuilly, in Nations and Nationalism, contrast nationalism and patriotism. "If the nobler word 'patriotism' then replaced 'civic/Western nationalism', nationalism as a phenomenon had ceas

Some Proposals

So I have some ideas for Shomakoh.

Realisitic Ones that are going to happen

-Camping Trip
-Yart Sale (yard art sale) sometime in early july?

Maybe
-Tattoos, I know Allie is down

Something for for the future
-Zine/Promo or something, with all of our art bio/contact to send out as promo to people? We can all pitch in for a nice print and then get offset because it will be in bulk! Maybe?

-Sleepover Europe edition, keep it in mind...

Thats all I got for now.
-Danielle

More places to submit/promote

Artsprojekt is sort of like Society6 meets Etsy, maybe? You can promote work, while also setting up a shop which you can put any image on shirts/hoodies/prints/skateboard decks/etc etc etc. Each item has a base price for which they produce it and then you set the markup for how much you get in return. You have to submit images to get approved, and they do hold shows and stuff.

Roguemonkworkshop Sort of like Threadless, but they also sell designs to retail outlets. If a design makes it through in voting, then the designer gets 10% of the wholesale price of each item sold.

Anyway, no idea if anyone's interested, but thought I'd pass along the word.

And since it has nothing to do with anything, here's a picture of a Corgi.

Some destinations are moving away while others are approaching

It's Tuesday, and I feel like I've fallen out on to a warm pile. Thank you Cheif Shomakoh for a space to sprawl out. I'm already contemplating creative spaces. Anyone wanna share some studio space in China Town? I have some friends who have already done it, they got nice spot for 6 people at $200 a head. Sheeiiiiiit.

for now, this will have to do:

Fantasy Pin up Contest

Hey guys, for anyone who's interested, there's a fantasy themed pin up contest going on right now on Artorder.

Also, Frank Frazetta died this weekend. Did you know that he had a stroke and lost the use of his left (dominant) hand, so he re-taught himself to paint with his right? Tough old bastard. RIP.

grand plans in the works

no words are necessary, but just in case: AMAZING.

The First Spark

"Without a paper, a journal of some kind, you cannot unite a community."

-Gandhi

As the graduates of the class of 2010 walk across the stage to get their diploma's placeholder, I wonder if the inevitable diaspora that began for my own graduating class a year ago is on their minds. While we are in school a beautiful thing happens. We are brought into contact with each other without any personal effort, we exchange ideas as a requirement, and form friendships from serendipity. However, once that anchor is removed, we begin to drift away.

Welcome to Smoke Signals, the Camp Shomakoh newsletter. My hope is that this blog will serve as a way for all of us to keep the sense of community that we had in the classrooms, the studios, the bars and the campgrounds. Think of this as a digital communal studio, a place to let everyone know about new projects and opportunities, get constructive input about works in progress, and show off our finished work to people who really understand and care.

But don't let my ambitions for this blog define your own. Post whatever you want, whatever you think is inspirational, funny, cool, or so gross you can't turn away. This is a melting pot for our imaginations. Let's get cooking.
